Protein Review for Building Mass Gains

Proteincollage
The saying “YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR” definitely holds true in the sports supplements world and probably more so with the wide range of proteins that are available today. There are lots of cheap products out there that will give you very limited results.

Protein is, in my opinion the most important supplement you can take when training and there are many great ways to use it rather than just in shakes. I use it in healthy cakes, homemade ice cream, protein pancakes and many other ways.  check out Mayling’s website, blog, and you tube channel for  ideas and recipes).

This is my review of three high end proteins that are on the market today. All are very good and show great results but I found one that gave me the best results.

People will have their own opinions and you can make good arguments for all three as to which is the best. I wasn’t disappointed with any of them and would not hesitate to recommend or

Nitro Peak

This is a great tasting protein although it doesn’t mix very well. I found the best way to take this was blending in to a smoothie as it was impossible to mix completely in a shaker. It tastes good mixed with just water although I add a splash of skimmed milk or no sugar soy milk to make it extra creamy tasting.

With a 36g serving Nitro has the most fat and the most sugar content.

It also has the lowest percentage of protein per serving although it has to be said   the differences are very marginal.

For extra benefits it also contains 9g of Glutamine and BCAAs in each serving.

A very good protein that I definitely felt the benefits of using and as the cheapest of the three was very good value.

MusclePharm Combat powder

Just slightly more expensive than Nitro Peak, Combat powder is advertised as having “advanced time release protein” that claims to feed the muscles for up to eight hours after its taken. From a 35g serving it contains 24g of protein. It has the least sugar with only 1g, and with 2.5g of fat it is in the middle of the three.  As with Nitro the main problem is the difficulty with mixing and again I found it was a lot better when blended rather that shaken.

I had the chocolate peanut butter flavor and as with the other two you cannot fault the taste.

Again another great product that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend or use myself.

Nitro-Tech

This protein is the most expensive of the three but is it worth the extra money?

All the marketing for this product screams science. From all the claims and diagrams on the label it looks as if it has just jumped out of the research laboratory and gives the impression that it is more than a protein powder. But here are the simple facts as I found them.

This was the best tasting out of the three and mixed perfectly in just a shaker. It had the highest protein percentage in each serving and also contained the least fat. Packed with vitamins and BCAAs it has more to offer than the other two. This is another great protein that you will benefit from taking.

I travel to different countries and have tried many different proteins. I found these three products available in most places I have visited and wouldn’t hesitate to put all three in my first choices when I am buying. But there can be only one winner and for me it was the Combat powder from MusclePharm. It does exactly what it says on the label and I found that I maintained lean hard muscle even when taking days off from the gym. The time releasing proteins really do work and it continued to feed the muscle through out the day and even as I slept. If they can sort out the mixing issue it would be the perfect product for me although it is only a small problem.

Thanks for reading and I hope this helped you a little in making your choice.

Slimming Tea; Not “The” Answer but it helps

I received a comment from a client in London regarding (Which) Slimming Tea I mentioned in my previous Post;

A Week of my PT Food/Training Diary

It’s not a miracle “Slimming tea” as such it’s more of an eliminator, it has a laxative effect if you take the recommended 3-6 a day but I only take 1 because as with my supplement intake I find if you over use a product it can be ineffective as your body adapts and becomes use to it.  As I suffer from severe IBS ( Irritable Bowel Syndrome) The 1 teabag gives me the extra help from cramps and low energy. , regulating balance, ridding toxins, making me feel lighter and my skin glow bright.

I recommend taking this 1st thing on a empty stomach to get the most out of the benefits.  Make with hot water and I also like to add the juice of 1/2 a lemon freshly squeezed to get even more of a detox hit!

Originating from Indonesia it contains Roots, Barks, Seeds, powdered Flowers and other vitamins and minerals.

Take this as part of my healthy lifestyle not relying on this soley as a weight loss substitute as nothing works better than eating lean and moving your body.

FYI; I have also bought the slim Spa tea which was 6x more expensive from the same supermarket here in Singapore and it wasn’t half as effective!

:)

Testing Nitro Peak Protein Shot for Post-Training

20110819-023014.jpg

I just picked this up at my local Gym(@Bedok) as I was caught short not having packed my BCAA’s or my fave Protein serving.

I was enticed by the 50 grams of Protein per serving! (even thou having slacked off the weights for the last month with my muscle loss I will probably over load my kidney’s and pass most of this Protein out ;(

Well the taste was thick, orange and very very sweet, it was similar to cough medicine, so I downed thinking of the gains but at $5 a shot and me being a chocoholic I will be remembering my yummy Shaker next time?

But saying that it does also have

5.6g Glutamine ( I trained hard and only have been training in Combat for last month on tour, so my muscles will surely be ripped up Yeay! But DOMS noooo)

3.7g BCAAs,

5g Taurine

& only 2g Carbs even thou it was sickly sweet! So if they did it in thick chocolate-we might have a loving partnership!

Let me know how you rate it, thanxs

1, My Training tour of Asia-Coconut Water

Hi and Apologies ;(

Sorry I haven’t been posting the last few weeks as I literally haven’t a minute to do so, traveling from Singapore to Phuket, Bali and Malaysia so far, on a amazing experience of training and traveling, working towards my next qualifications and passion to be a Raw Combat International Instructor.

But my favourite …. the constant supply of fresh COCONUT WATER wish has been a life saver. I was super excited when I found Air Asia, who I have been flying with every 3-4 days now have them on their flights too! HAPPY DAYZ

Protein Powders, what I look for?

When shopping for a new Protein the last thing I want is a very calorific meal replacement drink or a low quality Protein were my gains are hindered after training to recovering.

20110715-032748.jpg

 1,                  2,               3,

Here are some tips for what i look for,

1st, PROTEIN content, at 25grams or higher per serving the quality of the product is better.

2nd, CARB content 2grams per serving max, you really don’t have to settle for less as there is a lot of choice with different brands competing in quality.    (I prefer to save my carbs limits to good food  ; )

3rd, FAT content 1 gram max as you can pick a good Isolate  with 0grams Fat these days with prices not much more expensive than whey.

1, WHEY ( 8/10)

2, ISOLATE (8-10) CLEANER BUT FLAVOUR DULLER!

3, WHEY (7/10) QUALITY LESS THAN THE REST BUT HAD TO TRY THE CHOCOLATE MINT FLAVOUR-BUT THIS WAS AVERAGE IN TASTE.

I take 1scoop pre serving 2-3 times a day depending on my nutrition and training that day.

My Favourite Protein Smoothie (in My Bali Kitchen)

MONKEY MAGIC SMOOTHIE

(A.K.A CHUNKY MONKEY IN LYTE CAFE)

1 SCOOP PROTEIN, 1TBS NATURAL PEANUT BUTTER, 1/2 WATER, 1/2 LACTOSE FREE SKIMMED MILK, 3 ICE CUBES, 1/2 BANANA, 8 ALMONDS, 5GR L-GLUTAMINE (OPTIONAL).

BALI

Filmed in The kitchen of a Ganesh Villa, Seminyak.
It rented for 12million a month
(approx 1000 euros)

Located 2 mins from the Beach, in the video I just back from my 1st Surf lesson where I nailed it ;) YEAY, but haven’t since ;( But only tried once and months later so as God loves a tryer, I’ll be BACK!

Nice villa to look at but stressful after just a few nights, the thatched roofed was a home to a big black rat!!! Who shared the villa with us and the Open air  Bathroom and outside kitchen made me a mosquito treat as there was lots of stagnant ponds in the gardens.

Now when we return to Bali we look for basic accommodation but CLOSED! and as long as we have wifi….Happy Days x
